How to Make the Perfect Matcha 🌿✨

Matcha is more than just a drink - it’s a little daily ritual. Its vibrant green colour, soft earthy flavour, and calming energy make it the perfect way to start (or reset) your day.

Here’s how to make a cup that’s smooth, frothy, and beautiful every time.

1. Choose Good Matcha

For sipping, go for ceremonial grade. It should be bright green with a fresh, slightly sweet aroma. Lower quality matcha often looks dull and tastes more bitter — perfect for baking, but not for your morning cup.

2. Gather Your Tools

You don’t need much, but a few traditional tools make the process feel special:

  • Chawan: A wide bowl for whisking.

  • Chasen: A bamboo whisk for creating that signature foam.

  • Chashaku: A bamboo scoop for measuring.

  • Fine mesh sifter: Keeps your matcha silky smooth.

3. Sift the Matcha

Add 1–2 scoops (about 1 tsp) of matcha powder to your bowl through the sifter. This removes clumps and helps the powder blend easily with the water.

4. Heat the Water Just Right

Warm your water to about 175°F (80°C) - hot enough to dissolve the powder but not so hot that it turns the flavour bitter.

5. Whisk to Perfection

Pour in a small amount of water and whisk in quick “M” or “W” motions until frothy. Add the rest of the water and whisk again for a smooth, creamy texture.

6. Enjoy the Moment

Pour into your favourite cup, sip slowly, and take a breath. For a latte, add frothed milk and a touch of honey or vanilla.
